West Highland Masters – 5/6 November 2016

A beautiful autumn weekend greeted competitors as they arrived at Atlantis Leisure in Oban this year, although a busy Saturday schedule gave little spare time.

In the combined Over 40 and 45 mini leagues Peter Buchan dominated by not dropping a game all weekend with Douglas Emery beating all the other competitors to take 2nd place

Over 50’s was controlled by team mates Chris Holt and Brian Robertson with Brian taking the honours by beating Chris 4 games to 1 in the deciding match. Tom Adams kept the league alive in the final round by taking the first game against Brian but Brian proved too strong and took the match 3 games to 1

The over 55’s had an initial pair of mini leagues with Norman Paterson and Allan Law having an epic battle for bragging rights in league 1 and Rolf Hansen getting the second spot in league 2 from Keith Gristwood on count back.

In the semi finals Rolf met a very focused Norman Paterson who won in 3 straight games and David McAleese came back from 2 games down against Allan to book his final spot.

Norman completed an excellent weekend by beating a tired David in the final 3 games to 1

The Over 60’s also had initial mini leagues with John Rae winning league 1 comfortably. League 2 was a tougher affair and led to some very tired players on Saturday evening with Jim Dougal digging deep into reserves to win the league with a 3 games to 2 win over newcomer Bryan Jackson.

The semis were both won in straight games with John Rae beating Eric Donohoe and Jim overcoming John Charles to give a familiar feel to the final.

John completed a fine weekend by beating Jim 3 games to 2 although Jim went 2 games to 1 up before John won the final 2 games

In the over 65’s an unfortunate injury to Emilio Fazzi in his first game meant that the mini league was shorten but Dave Sturman won both his games comfortably to take the win

Many thanks to the competitors for their attendance over the weekend and thanks to Atlantis Leisure for hosting the event and sponsoring the prizes.

Local referee Keith Oversby came and helped out with the marking this year gaining more experience but the bulk of the refereeing was done once again by Maureen and Iain who did an epic stint on Saturday afternoon and evening ensuring the all the games went smoothly. Many thanks to them for their continued support of our tournament.
