Scotland squad announced for World Team Championships

The Scotland squads for the World Team Championships in Hong Kong next month have been confirmed.

For the first time ever, this year’s championship will see the men’s and women’s competitions running concurrently from Monday 9th December to Sunday 15th December.

It promises to be an exciting week for Scotland’s squash fans, as the country’s top players go toe to toe with the world’s best.

Both the women’s and men’s teams will look to build on an eighth-place finish in their previous effort, held in Egypt in 2021 and New Zealand in 2023 respectively.

Leading the line-up for Scotland is Georgia Adderley, who reached a career high number 25 in the world last week following a run to the semi-final of the Malaysia Cup.

Alison Thomson, currently world number 89 and Ellie Jones are also selected, with both having played a role in Scotland’s strong showing at the European Team Championships earlier this year.

18-year-old Robyn McAlpine, fresh from a fourth-place finish at the British Junior Championship, completes the squad.

This won’t be Robyn’s first senior cap, having represented Scotland at the European Team Championships in 2022, but it will be the Glasgow squash ace’s debut at a senior world-level event.

The men’s team contains three of the four players that secured an eighth-place finish in New Zealand last year.

Greg Lobban, currently ranked number 20 in the world, will start the tournament on a high after winning his 14th PSA title in Vancouver last month.

Familiar faces Rory Stewart and Alasdair Prott will be joined by Martin Ross, whose perfect record helped Scotland secure promotion at the European Team Championships earlier this year.

Scottish Squash Elite Performance Coach Paul Bell said: “The World Team Championships is a fantastic opportunity for Scotland’s players to challenge themselves against the top nations in a team competition.

“This year provides a fantastic opportunity for the next generation of Scottish players to show what they can do against the world’s best, in the absence of Scottish Squash stalwarts Alan & Lisa.

“Having the men and women competing together brings a new but exciting dynamic to the event, which can showcase the strength and togetherness of the Scottish performance players.

“Everyone has worked incredibly hard to get to the event both on and off the court. To support the team’s participation we have received additional support and sponsorship from numerous partners, and everyone is excited to have the opportunity to repay the faith and support shown by Scotland’s squash community.”

Thank you to main sponsor Springfield Properties PLC for their continued backing of Scotland’s top squash players.

Thank you also to groupH, Gillem Tulloch and Stewart Licudi for their generous support which help make the team’s participation in Hong Kong possible.
