All eyes on the prize as Scottish Cup winners set to be crowned this weekend

History will be made as the first ever winners of the new Scottish Cup will be crowned in the capital this weekend.

Four teams will compete for honours in the men’s and women’s draws respectively at Edinburgh Sports Club this Saturday.

With European qualification on the line, the winners will secure an opportunity to compete with the continent’s best in Nuremberg.

In the men’s draw, Watsonian A are hoping to replicate their success in last year’s National League – the predecessor to this year’s Scottish Cup – where they took the crown.

Captain Thomas Clark said: “The new format has been fantastic, and it has been great to see more teams involved this year.

“We’re hoping to win the whole thing and secure our place back at the European Club Championships.

“Representing Watsonians in Europe was brilliant, it’s such a great tournament going away with your team and competing against some of the best players in the world.

“Winning the first Scottish Cup would mean a lot to me, especially doing it with Watsonians – the club where I first picked up a racket.”

Their route to finals day saw them defeat Bridge of Allan in the Last 16, before overcoming Watsonian B in an inter-club derby.

Inverness Tennis and Squash Club await in the semi-final, with Edinburgh Sports Club 1 set to face Edinburgh Sports Club Galacticos in what promises to be a fiercely competitive match between friends – and for one day only, foes.

The women’s draw features Watsonian, Bridge of Allan 1, Heriot-Watt University and the winners of last year’s National League, Edinburgh Sports Club.

The Edinburgh side will be hoping home advantage gives them an edge in their semi-final clash with Bridge of Allan 1.

Watsonian will take on Heriot-Watt University, with all four teams likely to have their eyes on the prize in what could be a tightly contested set of fixtures.

Edinburgh Sports Club captain Susie Lind said: “Finals day is going to be a great chance to watch and play squash in its most fun format – competitive matches with a team dynamic.

“We are so chuffed to be involved – it’s a new experience for all of us – and we are looking forward to supporting each other, whatever the results!”

All of the action is free to watch and it gets underway at 10am on Saturday at Edinburgh Sports Club.
