Scottish Squash to launch new competition pathway for 2026-27
Scottish Squash have announced a new three-stage competition pathway launching from the 2026-27 season, aiming to improve the way players of all levels engage with competitive squash.
Following consultation with key stakeholders across the game, Scottish Squash has announced a restructured competitions framework designed to bring greater clarity, inclusivity and purpose to the national calendar. The new pathway replaces the existing sanctioning system and is built around three clearly defined stages: START, PLAY and PERFORM.
Why the Change?
Scottish Squash identified a clear need for greater transparency across the competitions calendar after review of recent seasons. Under the current system, a high proportion of Bronze-sanctioned events vary significantly in profile, standard and the stage of players they attract. The new structure addresses this disparity, allowing players to easily identify the right events for their level.
From 2026-27, the Scottish Squash calendar and tournament information pages will clearly indicate which events are suitable for which players, and what competitors can expect when they attend and compete.
The Three Stages Explained
Stage 1 — START is aimed at new juniors taking their first steps in competition. With a focus on ball progression and beginner-friendly formats, START events are designed to celebrate every milestone along the way, making the early competitive experience enjoyable and rewarding.
Stage 2 — PLAY is for club players of all ages who are looking for fun, varied competition against others of a similar ability. Whether you’re a looking to develop your game or simply looking for social squash and exercise, PLAY events offer the right environment to compete and improve at your own pace.
Stage 3 — PERFORM is for competitive players looking to challenge themselves and measure their game at a higher level, with their sights set on national ranking and selection for representative teams. This stage incorporates the Junior and Senior Gold events, Masters Regionals, the annual Scottish National Championships and the Scottish Squash Cup; the most prestigious events on the calendar.
What Changes in Practice?
- Events that were previously sanctioned at Bronze level will now sit within either START or PLAY, depending on their profile and purpose.
- Former Silver events will move into the PLAY stage.
- Junior and Senior Gold events will remain in the competition pathway under PERFORM.
- The Platinum sanctioning level will be discontinued.
