Refereeing strategy launched to transform squash officiating in Scotland
Scottish Squash has today unveiled a bold new strategy to transform the future of squash officiating in Scotland.
Titled “A Vision for Squash Refereeing in Scotland (2025-2028)”, the strategy sets the scene for a national mission to build a stronger, more diverse and sustainable referee workforce – ensuring competitive squash thrives for generations to come.
Why now?
With some regions lacking qualified referees and a need to plan for future succession, Scottish Squash is committed to building a sustainable and diverse officiating workforce.
At present, just 7% of referees are under 35, and just 8% are women – both demographics significantly under-represented in squash officiating – and an opportunity to grow the workforce.
Without action, the sport faces a major challenge to meet officiating requirements for high-level events in the years to come.
Key aims
Fresh perspectives
Refereeing should be accessible to all – from junior players, to parents, professionals to supporters.
Building a community
The refereeing experience should be supportive and professional, with fair processes and recognition.
Raising the bar
Refereeing in Scotland should align with global standards through the World Squash Officiating qualification framework.
What changes are coming?
The strategy outlines several immediate and long-term actions to build capacity and confidence:
- Club-level marking courses to kickstart officiating journeys
- Development of a mentorship programme in progress
- Targeted initiatives for underrepresented groups
- Transparent appointment processes
- Implementation of a national pathway
A Call to Action
This strategy has been put together by Scotland’s squash community, with input from regions, referees, coaches, parents and players of all ages. We all have a role to play in building a future where squash in Scotland is confidently officiated.
What did they say?
Stuart Monteith, Workforce Development Manager: “This is an exciting moment for squash refereeing in Scotland. There are challenges ahead, but there are also more opportunities to get involved at all levels and develop refereeing confidence than ever before. This strategy has been created by Scotland’s squash community, and over the next three years we would encourage all members of the squash in Scotland community to get involved in the national mission to safeguard competitive squash for the years to come.”
Lee Drew, Head of World Squash Officiating: “Scottish Squash’s commitment to developing a dedicated officiating strategy is exactly what the sport needs. Quality officiating is vital at every level – from local club matches to national championships – and this strategic approach to recruitment, development, and support of referees will strengthen squash across Scotland. By embracing the WSO qualification framework and creating clear pathways for officials, Scotland is leading by example and showing other nations how to effectively invest in their officiating community.”
Thank you to the Vision for Squash Refereeing in Scotland working group members for their efforts in producing the strategy, and to everyone that contributed.
