Referee Training Seminars – Sat 15th April 2017

Over 20 referees from all over Scotland attending the workshop held at Edinburgh Sports Club over Easter weekend!

Roy Gingell, Director of ESF Refereeing Committee delivered a variety of sessions on 15th April.

Roy gave his insight into the current interpretation and implementation of the rules, and how he saw refereeing progressing over the next few years at a World, European, and National level

The morning session was for new referees (Grade 3) and those interested in becoming referees. The session finished with video clips of refereeing decisions from recent matches on the PSA circuit.

The afternoon session was for intermediate refs (Grade 2) and top refs (National Grade), finishing with a recent match with 25 decisions, and the audience marking their own decisions.

Both sessions were very well received, and the referees would like to again express their appreciation & thanks to Roy.

Scottish Squash (SSRL) are trying to encourage new referees and those who wish to progress should note that regular Referee Courses are held throughout Scotland, with assessments arranged at Regional and National tournaments.

When the Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow in 2014, Scotland had 9 active National Grade Referees, but this has fallen to 5 active with only 3 prepared to travel outside Scotland.

It is a top priority for John Crawford – Chairman of SSRL Referees Committee and Jim Hay – President of SSRL to increase Scottish referee numbers and produce more top grade Scottish Referees, especially younger talent.

This type of training seminar can only help SSRL achieve its longer term refereeing aims.
