Central Junior Open Report

The Central Junior Open held at Bridge of Allan Sports Club kicked off the 2016/17 season in style with a total of 63 entries.

It was clear from the standard of play that our junior players had spent a summer of hard training. There were some outstanding matches played over the weekend with all players showing fantastic spirit and sportsman ship on and off court.

Finals afternoon began with a superb tussell between Lewis Thomson from Dalgety Bay and newcomer, former South African Andrew Widelko (Scotstoun). This was a thrilling five setter with both boys fighting hard and showing moments of fantastic shot play. Thomson just had the edge and came out on top in the fifth game making him winner of Division 8.

Next on court was the division 7 final, between two locals, Dunblane’s Duncan Hegarty and Louise Hunter. The spectators were in for another five setter thriller. This time it was Duncan Hegarty’s turn to take the honours and become division 7 winner.

In Division 6 Kyle Penman took full advantage of playing at his home club and proved to be too much of a handful for ASRC’s Gregor Gerry. Penman ran away with a 3/0 victory giving him the division 6 title.

Division 5 was an all West affair between Giffnocks Huzifahi Ali and SSRC’s Jack Fenton. Both boy’s played well and showed great maturity in their shot selection however it was Ali who took the match and the division 5 title.

Moving swiftly on to the division five final which was another thrilling five setter match. It was Maddie Orr’s turn to become winner of her division defeating Euan Reed (DLE) 3/2. A highly commendable performance from both players with Reed just being piped at the end.

Progressing on to division three which produced another female winner. Local Emma Fitzsimmons recovered from a hard weekend of matches to defeat Glasgow Academy’s Andrew Glen. Fitzsimmons proved too strong for Glen and was another worthy winner.

Our next match of the day was Division 2 final, and another five setter! On court was Fraser Steven (Thurso) against Ruadhri McDougall (Strathgryffe). This match could have gone either way but it was Fraser Steven who came out on top with a 3/2 win.

So, now moving on to the finale, division one Final between our up and coming juniors, Chris Murphy and Alasdair Prott. Both boys played a fine match and showed just why they have been doing so well on the European Junior circuit. It was Prott who came out on top of this match and was crowned as Division One Champion.

Special thanks go to Bridge of Allan for hosting the event and Alan MacGregor for organising. This was another successful tournament organised by the Central Region. The weekend ran very smoothly with matches finishing early on Sunday.
