David unsquashable in Sweden
David Jones jetted off to Malmo in Sweden just days before his 13th Birthday to compete in the Nordic Junior Squash Open. The tournament attracted players from across Europe, the USA, Egypt and India.
David won the boy’s under 13s event without even dropping a game. He went to the event as an unknown unseeded player so when he met the fourth seed in the first match things seemed doubtful. David rose to the challenge and won the match 9-5, 9-2, 9-0 putting him through to the quarter final. The quarter final brought another seeded player from Finland but David showed him who was boss and won 9-2, 9-0, 9-1.
David went into the semi-final with the whole Scottish Squash Team behind him and also people supporting from home. Friends and family watched him play over the internet thanks to a web link set up by the organisers. David stepped onto the glass court against Joey Verheyen from Belgium the number one seed. This was going to be David’s toughest challenge yet. David won 10-9, 9-0, 10-9; coming from behind in two very tough games.
The day before his 13th Birthday David played the final. His opponent was another seeded player from Hungry. This didn’t faze David, he went on court focussed and quickly won 9-3, 9-2, 9-1 to win the tournament. A great result for David and for Scotland!
One for the girls
The Central Junior squash open was definitely one for Perth girls Claire Gray and Rebecca MacKercher (9) who travelled to the two day event at Bridge of Allan to compete in the under 17 tournament and under 11 tournament respectively. Clair Gray after an easy ride to the final met Hannah Anthony, after a tough match she went home with the runners up trophy. Rebecca also had a tough final and like Claire was runner up making it another good result for Perth.
The next big event in the squash calendar is the Inter-regional competition taking place on the weekend of the 18th and 19th November. The competition being held at Heriott Watt University attracts teams from all over Scotland. The midlands region is entering two teams this year, an under 15 team and an under 19 team. Those selected for the under 15 teams are David Jones Calum Johnston Scott Findlay Calum Anderson and Jennifer Humphries. While the under 19 team is made up of Chris Bode, David Gordon, Andrew Marshall, Calum Howitt and Clair Gray. Good luck to both teams.
