Junior Ranking System

The rankings system has been developed with the following visions:

- To establish a clear competition pathway, integrated with the National Junior Excellence Programme;
- To ensure appropriate competition between all players, while recognising their particular stage of athletic development;
- To encourage participation in the Scottish Junior Circuit.

All domestic tournaments will be designated either A or B status with appropriate points allocated for finishing places. All tournaments will be run on a monrad system with all competitors playing off for final positions.

The year will be broken into quarters. Players are commended to play a minimum number of tournaments in each quarter of the year. If more than this number is played, the best results are taken as "counting". If fewer than the minimum tournaments are competed in, the players ranking divisor is still increased.

Quarter Required Tournaments

1. August / September / October 2
2. November / December / January 2
3. February / March / April 2
4. May / June / July 1

For example, if a player competes in three tournaments in the first quarter, his best two results "count", with the third discarded for ranking purposes.
Through this discarding, players are given more scope to experiment and put under less pressure without the idea that one win or loss could mean everything for their season.

Conversely if the player then doesn't compete in the second quarter his divisor still goes to four, even though he has not earned more points.
Through this a player does not have the option of making a strong start to the season and then withdrawing from competition.

Points earned from ESF tournaments will count towards Scottish rankings, however they may make up only one tournament in each quarter.
The rankings will be used as one of the guides for representative selections.

Players over the age of sixteen are able to enter any of the Senior Domestic Closed tournaments and have them count both for participation purposes and for rankings points. In order for a junior player to take points from the Senior Domestic Closed tournament they must finish in the top two
thirds of the field.

The goal of the ranking system is to ensure that players have appropriate and integrated competition to complement the Junior Excellence Programme.

Both training and competition are necessary if Scotland is to produce senior players of the highest calibre and this is a clear and simple step towards further facilitating that goal.
