2008 European Team Championships Amsterdam, Netherlands, 30
April - 3 May
The
36th Men’s and 31st Women's European Team Championships
will be held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, April 30 - May 3.
The event will be the biggest ever European Team Championships
– featuring a record 47 teams - and marks the ninth
time the event will be held by the Dutch Squash Bond.
Scotland will be represented in both the
men’s and women’s events and are seeded eight
and fifteen respectively. The men face a tough pool featuring
defending champions England - which makes progress difficult,
as only one team from the pool can make the semi-finals. The
women are grouped with Wales and Finland, needing to defeat
both teams to progress into 5-12 place play-offs.
Both teams have been beset by various external
factors which have influenced their composition – giving
some of our best younger players the opportunity to make a
mark at the
top level.
The men’s team is comprised of:
• Alan Clyne
• Stuart Crawford
• Chris Small
• Jamie Macaulay
• Alistair Gorrie
• Lyall Paterson
The women’s team is comprised of:
• Frania Gillen-Buchert
• Claire Kidd
• Lisa Aitken
• Caron Lawrie
The men’s team sees Scotland’s
new National Champion, Alan Clyne, at number one string for
the first time. Alan has enjoyed a stellar season and will
be one of the “players to watch” in the Championships
as he begins to make a stamp on the upper echelons of the
sport. Alistair Gorrie and Lyall Paterson are new caps –
Paterson at the age of 18 being the youngest addition to the
National men’s team for over a decade.
The women’s team features Frania Gillen-Buchert
and Claire Kidd at the top of the order. As with the men’s
team, the Scottish National U/19 Champion, Lisa Aitken, has
been selected and is included at third string. All three women
have had various successes on the WISPA tour this season and
their experiences should serve them well. The women’s
team also sees a new cap - Caron Lawrie, a former junior internationalist
- making her debut in the senior team.
ASRC Crowned National League Champions 2007-08
Following the most exciting National League
season for many years the National League Finals more than
lived up to expectations with Aberdeen Squash Racquets Club
(ASRC) and Newlands LT & Squash Club both overcoming Hotel
Du Vin Western and Bridge of Allan in their respective semi-finals
to face eachother for the 2007-08 National League crown on
Saturday 12 April at ASRC.
It was Hotel Du Vin Western (squad: Alan
Clyne, Iain Logan, Kenny Boyle, Jason Broadberry & Caron
Lawrie) who were victorious in the 3rd place play-off, squeezing
out Bridge of Allan (squad: Iain Tennant, Adam Bews, Frania
Gillen-Buchert, Katie Buchanan & Robin Bairner) by 1 game
to claim 3rd place.
After a hard fought final it was the ASRC
team (Alex Gough, Daryl Selby, Simon Parke and Lisa Aitken)
who overcame reigning champions Newlands (Hadrian Stiff, Derek
Ryan, Peter Marshall and Kasey Brown), in front of a packed
crowd, to lift the National League title for 2007-08. A full
report will be featured in the next edition of Rebounder.
Congratulations to all the teams and thanks
to ASRC for hosting the National League Finals and National
Coaching Conference. If your club would like to challenge
ASRC for the 2008-09 National League crown, or would like

White Out
Scottish number one and world number ten,
John White, has withdrawn from Scotland's team for the World
Championships to be played in Chennai, India, December 5-12.
John has recently taken up the job of Head Squash Coach at
the prestigious Franklin and Marshall College in the US and
in withdrawing from the team has cited work commitments, although
reiterating his commitment to play for Scotland in future
events and his intention to remain active on the PSA Tour.
The pullout brings 21 year old Shetlander,
Jamie Macaulay, into the team as reserve. Macaulay is a student
at Heriot-Watt University and has won caps for Scotland in
two previous European Championships. The team will now be
led by Alan Clyne at first string, National Champion, Stuart
Crawford at second string and Commonwealth Games quarter-finalist,

Junior Inter Regional’s and Scottish University Teams
Results
Over the weekend the Scottish Junior Inter
Regional’s and the SUS Team Championships 2007 were
hosted at the Scottish National Squash Centre at Heriot Watt
University. Twenty-four inter regional teams from U11-U19
and thirteen university teams from all over Scotland came
to participate from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 November.
The junior inter regional’s were well
represented by all regions, and a special mention to the Highlands
and Islands who had four of their five teams finishing in
the top three positions of each age group. The finishing positions
for the tournament are listed below and congratulations to
all of the teams for their outstanding performances.
This year saw the welcome return of Robert
Gordon University to the SUS team’s competition and
Edinburgh University had a substantial turn out with three
teams entered into the men’s event. Congratulations
to Edinburgh University men’s first team for retaining
their Scottish University Champions title by beating Heriot
Watt 4-1, and to Glasgow University ladies’ team for
becoming the new champions beating Aberdeen by 74 points to
65.
Scottish Squash would like to thank the Heriot
Watt for the use of their facilities, Fresh Catering and the
massage therapists - Mark Gilks, Adele Gallacher, Rachael
Weatherly and Felicity Bradley, who contributed to make this
event a success. Special thanks go to Rona McCraw and Ron
Pearman for giving up their time to help to run the tournament.

Scottish Men’s Team Selected
Scotland's team to contest the 2007 World Men's Team Championships
will be:
John White
Alan Clyne
Stuart Crawford
Harry Leitch
The biannual event will take place in Chennai,
India, December 6-12. The team will be accompanied by National
Coach, Roger Flynn, and Team Manager, Linda Davie.
On paper the team looks a much stronger team
than that which finished in 13th position in Pakistan two
years ago. Long time Scottish number 1 and world top 10 player,
John White, remains the hardest hitter in the sport and shows
no signs of dropping down the ranking lists. Alan Clyne has
recently begun his PSA career and rapidly moved up the rankings
and Stuart Crawford has consolidated his position in the professional
game. Not to be forgotten, Harry Leitch, who led Scotland
at number 1 string in the European Championships earlier this
year, will be looking to continue on his excellent record
in a Scotland shirt.
Draws and details of the event will be up
on the website as available.

Loss of Coach Education & Development Manager & Postponement
of Coaching Conference
It is with regret that Scottish Squash announces
that Bill McNally, Coach Education and Development Manager,
will leave Scottish Squash on 30 March 2007. Bill will leave
behind a rapidly developing coaching structure in Scottish
Squash and a strong Level 3 coaching submission for United
Kingdom Coaching Certificate approval.
Unfortunately Scottish Squash has also announced
that the National Coaching Conference scheduled for 14-15
April 2007 will be postponed until a later date yet to be
confirmed. Scottish Squash apologises for any inconvenience
caused.
Alan Frame - Sudden Death of Former Internationalist
Scottish Squash is very sad to hear of
the very sudden death of Alan Frame who died of a heart attack
on Sunday 25th February 2007.
Alan was a great ambassador
for Scottish Squash. He represented Scotland on several occasions,
making his debut at the World Championships in New Zealand
in 1983 until the Home Internationals in Birmingham in 1990.

FEB 06 - Squash Team Announced for Commonwealth Games
Scotland 's squash team for the forthcoming Commonwealth
Games in Melbourne , 16-26 March, has been announced as: John
White (Scottish Institute of Sport), Harry Leitch (East Institute
of Sport), Louise Philip (East Institute of Sport) and Frania
Gillen-Buchert (East Institute of Sport).
Scotland 's former World Number 1, John White,
will be a force to contend with in the Men's Singles on familiar
turf and will be looking to improve on his recent injury-hampered
performance at the World Doubles Championships with Leitch.
Leitch's solid performance with the injured White will stand
them in good stead as both look forward to being fully fit
and seeded for the Games.
Scotland 's doubles specialists, Philip and
Gillen-Buchert, have been training hard following an excellent
performance at the World Doubles Championships. Their
doubles experience showed at the recent World Championships
as they defeated two 5/8 seeded pairings; a performance which
is expected to result in them also being seeded for the Games.
Philip, Gillen-Buchert and Leitch will also compete in the
singles events.
Support the Team by following their progress
