2008 European Team Championships Amsterdam, Netherlands, 30 April - 3 May

The 36th Men’s and 31st Women's European Team Championships will be held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, April 30 - May 3. The event will be the biggest ever European Team Championships – featuring a record 47 teams - and marks the ninth time the event will be held by the Dutch Squash Bond.

Scotland will be represented in both the men’s and women’s events and are seeded eight and fifteen respectively. The men face a tough pool featuring defending champions England - which makes progress difficult, as only one team from the pool can make the semi-finals. The women are grouped with Wales and Finland, needing to defeat both teams to progress into 5-12 place play-offs.

Both teams have been beset by various external factors which have influenced their composition – giving some of our best younger players the opportunity to make a mark at the
top level.

The men’s team is comprised of:
• Alan Clyne
• Stuart Crawford
• Chris Small
• Jamie Macaulay
• Alistair Gorrie
• Lyall Paterson

The women’s team is comprised of:
• Frania Gillen-Buchert
• Claire Kidd
• Lisa Aitken
• Caron Lawrie

The men’s team sees Scotland’s new National Champion, Alan Clyne, at number one string for the first time. Alan has enjoyed a stellar season and will be one of the “players to watch” in the Championships as he begins to make a stamp on the upper echelons of the sport. Alistair Gorrie and Lyall Paterson are new caps – Paterson at the age of 18 being the youngest addition to the National men’s team for over a decade.

The women’s team features Frania Gillen-Buchert and Claire Kidd at the top of the order. As with the men’s team, the Scottish National U/19 Champion, Lisa Aitken, has been selected and is included at third string. All three women have had various successes on the WISPA tour this season and their experiences should serve them well. The women’s team also sees a new cap - Caron Lawrie, a former junior internationalist - making her debut in the senior team.

ASRC Crowned National League Champions 2007-08

Following the most exciting National League season for many years the National League Finals more than lived up to expectations with Aberdeen Squash Racquets Club (ASRC) and Newlands LT & Squash Club both overcoming Hotel Du Vin Western and Bridge of Allan in their respective semi-finals to face eachother for the 2007-08 National League crown on Saturday 12 April at ASRC.

It was Hotel Du Vin Western (squad: Alan Clyne, Iain Logan, Kenny Boyle, Jason Broadberry & Caron Lawrie) who were victorious in the 3rd place play-off, squeezing out Bridge of Allan (squad: Iain Tennant, Adam Bews, Frania Gillen-Buchert, Katie Buchanan & Robin Bairner) by 1 game to claim 3rd place.

After a hard fought final it was the ASRC team (Alex Gough, Daryl Selby, Simon Parke and Lisa Aitken) who overcame reigning champions Newlands (Hadrian Stiff, Derek Ryan, Peter Marshall and Kasey Brown), in front of a packed crowd, to lift the National League title for 2007-08. A full report will be featured in the next edition of Rebounder.

Scottish Squash would like to congratulate Alan Clyne and Senga Macfie, winners of the 2008 Scottish National Championships held at Newland's LT & Squash Club in Glasgow on 20-22 February. Scottish Squash would like to thank all those who participated and attended in what proved to be an exciting and high quality event. A full report on the event will be included in the upcoming February Rebounder.

White Out

Scottish number one and world number ten, John White, has withdrawn from Scotland's team for the World Championships to be played in Chennai, India, December 5-12. John has recently taken up the job of Head Squash Coach at the prestigious Franklin and Marshall College in the US and in withdrawing from the team has cited work commitments, although reiterating his commitment to play for Scotland in future events and his intention to remain active on the PSA Tour.

The pullout brings 21 year old Shetlander, Jamie Macaulay, into the team as reserve. Macaulay is a student at Heriot-Watt University and has won caps for Scotland in two previous European Championships. The team will now be led by Alan Clyne at first string, National Champion, Stuart Crawford at second string and Commonwealth Games quarter-finalist, Harry Leitch coming in at third string.

The team will be accompanied by National Coach, Roger Flynn.

Junior Inter Regional’s and Scottish University Teams Results

Over the weekend the Scottish Junior Inter Regional’s and the SUS Team Championships 2007 were hosted at the Scottish National Squash Centre at Heriot Watt University. Twenty-four inter regional teams from U11-U19 and thirteen university teams from all over Scotland came to participate from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 November.

The junior inter regional’s were well represented by all regions, and a special mention to the Highlands and Islands who had four of their five teams finishing in the top three positions of each age group. The finishing positions for the tournament are listed below and congratulations to all of the teams for their outstanding performances.

This year saw the welcome return of Robert Gordon University to the SUS team’s competition and Edinburgh University had a substantial turn out with three teams entered into the men’s event. Congratulations to Edinburgh University men’s first team for retaining their Scottish University Champions title by beating Heriot Watt 4-1, and to Glasgow University ladies’ team for becoming the new champions beating Aberdeen by 74 points to 65.

Scottish Squash would like to thank the Heriot Watt for the use of their facilities, Fresh Catering and the massage therapists - Mark Gilks, Adele Gallacher, Rachael Weatherly and Felicity Bradley, who contributed to make this event a success. Special thanks go to Rona McCraw and Ron Pearman for giving up their time to help to run the tournament.

Scottish Men’s Team Selected

Scotland's team to contest the 2007 World Men's Team Championships will be:

John White
Alan Clyne
Stuart Crawford
Harry Leitch

The biannual event will take place in Chennai, India, December 6-12. The team will be accompanied by National Coach, Roger Flynn, and Team Manager, Linda Davie.

On paper the team looks a much stronger team than that which finished in 13th position in Pakistan two years ago. Long time Scottish number 1 and world top 10 player, John White, remains the hardest hitter in the sport and shows no signs of dropping down the ranking lists. Alan Clyne has recently begun his PSA career and rapidly moved up the rankings and Stuart Crawford has consolidated his position in the professional game. Not to be forgotten, Harry Leitch, who led Scotland at number 1 string in the European Championships earlier this year, will be looking to continue on his excellent record in a Scotland shirt.

Draws and details of the event will be up on the website as available.

Scotland 's squash team for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Melbourne , 16-26 March, has been announced as: John White (Scottish Institute of Sport), Harry Leitch (East Institute of Sport), Louise Philip (East Institute of Sport) and Frania Gillen-Buchert (East Institute of Sport).

Scotland 's former World Number 1, John White, will be a force to contend with in the Men's Singles on familiar turf and will be looking to improve on his recent injury-hampered performance at the World Doubles Championships with Leitch. Sep 05 - Tesco Gives Kids A Sporting Chance

Tesco Voucher SchemeSquash is one of the key sports joining thousands of sports clubs, 30,000 schools and Tesco shoppers in a new voucher collection scheme to receive free sports equipment and professional coaching sessions. The biggest initiative of its kind, Tesco Sport for Schools & Clubs will inspire the UK 's children to get fitter and healthier through emulating their sporting heroes and learning to enjoy and get involved in sport.

The multi-million pound scheme is live across all Tesco stores and is the result of extensive research with parents, teachers and club organisers. They said they would welcome a move that would provide much needed equipment - and essential coaching resources which would truly enthuse children to get involved in sport.

With that in mind, Tesco Sport for Schools & Clubs has teamed up with three of the UK 's leading world-class athletes - Paula Radcliffe, Frank Lampard and Jason Robinson. Together with some of the coaches in the scheme, they appear on a specially filmed DVD, packed with sporting hints and tips. It will be sent free to over 35,000 schools and clubs to use in PE lessons and club coaching sessions. They'll even have the chance to win a coaching session from Paula, Frank or Jason! The trio will also appear in a TV ad supporting the campaign.

Fresh from her World Championship gold medal marathon win in Helsinki , Paula comments: “This is a great way to get children playing more sport. It shows that you don't have to be a budding world champion; it's really about just having a go and enjoying it, so that in time sport becomes an everyday part of life.”

And with Frank becoming a new father – and Jason a dad for the fifth time last month, there is added relevance to their support. Jason said: “I have always loved sport and have been fortunate to have been encouraged along the way; with even just a little help and support, all youngsters can enjoy sport.” And Frank added: “It was brilliant to see the smiles on the kids' faces when we filmed the DVD. If just some of the children seeing it in their schools and clubs get as fired up, I'll feel we've all done a great job.”

Tesco's marketing director, Tim Mason concludes: “I've spent many years in retail, working to understand consumers and I believe that parents have never been clearer that they need to do something about their children's health. We already do a lot to address healthy lifestyles in store with our range of healthy living products and easy-to-understand nutritional labelling. But exercise is also an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and Tesco Sports for Schools and Clubs will help many children and their families to be inspired, get involved and become fitter and healthier.”

In exchange for vouchers which are collected from sales at Tesco stores, Squash clubs will be able to order a range of fun and exciting equipment that will compliment traditional equipment such as rackets and balls. Equipment to help training and coaching sessions such as skipping ropes, cones, markers, bean bags and even space hoppers are available now. Customers will receive one voucher for every 10 spent.

To register your squash club onto the scheme and receive a pack containing everything you need, simply call the helpline on 0870 333365. Alternatively you can register via the dedicated Tesco Sport for Schools & Clubs website, www.tesco.com/sport which carries a wealth of sporting information including the coaching videos on a variety of sports, easy exercise tips, such as warm up and warm down guidelines - and nutritional advice. As the campaign gets underway, the website will also showcase a School or Club of the Week.

The collection scheme will run for a total of eight weeks from 12th September until 6th November 2005 . Equipment will be delivered during the spring 2006 term.

And during this week, Squash is one of the two “Featured Sports” – so what are you waiting for!

Aug 05 - Calling all active coaches…..

Further to an ongoing review into Coaching in Scotland there is now an opportunity for active coaches to contribute their views to shape the new national framework for coaching. A questionnaire has been developed and is available via the address below.

Coaches are being urged to turn their thoughts to how the current coaching system can be improved, can be made to work and can be amongst the best in the world. All responses will be treated with the strictest confidentiality. It is important that as many active coaches as possible complete the questionnaire to provide valuable information to shape a new framework for coaching.

As an incentive all respondents will be entered into a prize draw to win an Apple iPod (20GB). Respondents should note that in order to enter the prize draw they need to provide a valid email address.

July 05 - Clyne and Crawford named Junior and Senior Players of the Year

Stuart and Alan receiving their Awards from President Rona McCrawThe winners of the Scottish Squash Annual Awards were announced at the AGM held in Perth on 27th June.

Alan Clyne was named "Junior Player of the Year" and received the Kim Bruce Lockhart Award in recognition of his hard work and achievements during the year.

Alan is our National U/19 Men's Champion and is noted both for his work ethic and honest, fair minded approach to the sport.
A former Inverness resident before moving south to attend Edinburgh University , both Alan and his family have made significant sacrifices in time and finances throughout his career.
Alan has represented Scotland at every junior age group in Home Internationals, European Championships and World Championships.
In the last year he has represented Scotland in the World Junior Men's Team Championships in Pakistan. Playing at number one Alan performed with bravery and distinction throughout. Alan went on to represent Scotland in the European U19 Teams Championships. Again, playing at number one he performed with distinction, instrumental in the team finishing in 7th position.
Alan won his first National Junior Closed title this year.
He is currently ranked number seven in Scotland in male senior rankings and has enjoyed success this season against our established male senior players.
Alan is one of our brightest and most likely hopes to move into the men's senior team in the foreseeable future.

The Senior Player of the Year Award went to our National Men’s Champion, Stuart Crawford who is also recognized for both his work ethic and fair minded approach on court. Throughout the past year Stuart has consolidated his position as Scottish number three behind John White and Martin Heath. He has represented Scotland with distinction this year in European Team and Individual Championships.
In the European Team Championships Stuart was instrumental in the team finishing in 5th position, the highest possible finish due to the teams initial seeding of 12. His performances against Ireland, Germany and Sweden formed the backbone of the team’s success.
At the recent European Individual Championships Stuart was defeated in a high standard second round match by world number 8 and eventual winner Greg Gautier of France. He went on through the tournament playoffs and finished in 9th position, defeating a host of experienced opponents.
Stuart is about to embark upon his PSA career, leaving for a six week tour of Australia and New Zealand in July.

Congratulations go to both players on their achievements in the 04/05 season and best wishes for continued success in 05/06.

Pam was defeated by Linda Elriani the world number six in the semi finals in a high standard match and then backed up to defeat English squad member Rebecca Botwright 3/1 in the bronze medal playoff. Pam's win was a popular one with the enthusiastic locals having "adopted" Pam and supported her well throughout the tournament.

Frania Gillen-Buchart and Stuart Crawford also had successful tournaments. Both players won through competitive first rounds only to be defeated by eventual winners, Vanessa Atkinson and Greg Gaultier. Following their defeats Frania and Stuart played through the monrad draw and did very well to finish in 10th and 9th places respectively with Stuart not dropping another game in three subsequent matches. Scotland's other representatives, Louise Philip and Harry Leitch were defeated first round by their 5/8 seeded opponents then made strong runs through the plate event. Louise easily won through without dropping a game and Harry finally finished in 18th position.

Jun 05 - MASTERS HOME INTERNATIONALS 2005 - The first Men's 070 event to be included in the Home International series was won by Scotland. Well done Alex Hamilton, Andy Jack, Pat Leonard and David Rogan. Scotland's win against England was another first. No Scottish Mens age group has ever won against the Auld enemy and to do it on England’s home ground was an added bonus.
