Clyne wins Edinburgh Open 2016

Another sell out on Edinburgh Sports Club’s famous Court Five for an eagerly anticipated final between Scotland’s No.1 player Alan Clyne and England’s Tom Richards. A Scot hadn’t lifted the title since John White in 2004.

First on Court were England’s Millie Tomlinson and Sina Wall of Germany. Tomlinson had looked good all tournament progressing to the final without the loss of a game, whilst Wall had had a tough four-set semi with Chloe Mesic of France.

Tomlinson started strongly and although Wall gave her a run for her money in the second game, Tomlinson closed out 11-4 in the third game to take her first Edinburgh Sports Club Open title.

In the mens final, Clyne started strongly and looked set to put in a real bid to become only the second Scot to take the biggest title in the country, the other being former world No.1 John White in 2004.

He took the first 11-4. The rallies were furious and Clyne was taking the ball early and picking up everything Richards could throw at him.

The same pace continued and during the second game Richards lunged for a ball and seemed to come out painfully. It became quite obvious he could no longer move and he conceded at the end of the second.

A disappointing end to the tournament both for Richards and the crowd – we all hope he makes a speedy recovery, but a fantastic win for local favourite Clyne, who had a great tournament also defeating five-times champion Daryl Selby in a five-game thriller en-route to the final the night before.
