Highland Master (29/30th Nov 03) Inverness.
The Highland Masters Squash Tournament has quickly gained a great reputation for having the most friendly atmosphere of all the age group tournaments, as well as serving superb home-made food to the hungry squash players who come from all over Britain to play. Over 55 players entered the tournament this year and came from as far away as Sidmouth in Devon and Unst in Shetland as well as many points in-between. The tournament attracted players in various age groups from the over 35s to three players in the over 70s event for the men. Women are perhaps more reluctant to reveal their ages but ten players competed against each other in an over 35s event and an over 50 event.

The Highlands area provided two winners. Jill Johnston from the Inverness club convincingly beat two Scottish international teammates on the way to retaining the over 35 women's event. Graeme Patullo from the Forres club beat David Ward from Glasgow in an extremely close match, 9-7 in the fifth game, to retain his title in the over 40 men's event.

In the over 35 men's event, there were several very close matches with Mark James of Aberdeen beating Greg Thomson of Edinburgh in an extremely entertaining final, having saved a match point in the fourth game.

Scottish Midlands Winter Graded Competition No3 Sunday 29th of February 2004

Cupar Sports Centre, Cupar

Cupar attracted a record amount of entries for a winter graded tournament in the Scottish Midlands Area. This was the first junior tournament to be held at Cupar Sports Centre and the first to be hosted by Cupar Junior Squash and Tournament organiser Graham Laing.
With 38 entries and over 40 matches to be played, some early rounds were played during the week and on Saturday at both Kinross and Cupar.
With such a large volume of people attending, Cupar squash valued the contribution of the Sports Centre staff who were both patient and helpful.
The competition produced a great atmosphere and through the endeavour of the organiser and referees, the matches were all played ahead of schedule which ensured a large audience for all the final matches.
Thanks go to Alan Gardener, Rob Winter, Dr. Caroline Peel and Jim Sweet for their valued contribution and refereeing throughout the event.

The European Team Championships

The European Team Championships were conducted in Rennes, France from April 28 to May 1.

The Scottish women's team consisted of Pam Nimmo, Sue Dalrymple, Lauren Gray and Frania Gillen-Buchart. The team finished in 8th position.

The Scottish Men's team consisted of John White, Martin Heath, Peter O'Hara, Stuart Crawford and Martin Woods. The team finished in 12th position.

The women's team was beset by injuries from the outset. The withdrawl of Wendy Maitland and Senga McFie due to injury and personal reasons hit hard. Seeded 3rd, the team finished a credible
8th.

Pam Nimmo proved an example to her team mates on and off the court. Pam defeated a string of top 20 players including world number 3 Vanessa Atkinson. These wins, on the back of her defeat of Englands Linda Charman in Texas last month all bode well for Pam's push towards the very top echelons of the women's game in the near future.

Sue Dalrymple, Lauren Gray and Frania Gillen-Buchart performed credibly. Sue, defying several niggling injuries did well to win a crucial tie versus Switzerland to guarantee a top 8 finish. Lauren
and Frania both performed whole heartedly and will benefit from the experience. Lauren has enjoyed a solid season, cementing herself in the top 8 junior women in Europe and is placed to push into senior ranks.

The men's team played hard, but disappointingly failed to return to the top 8. John White, former world number one, put in another commited performance for Scotland as did Martin Heath. Martin,
battling food poisoning, was unable to compete at his usual world class level, however, showed enough, particularly in his dismissal of Irelands John Rooney, to suggest that his days at the top of the men's game are not yet over.

Peter O'Hara, a Scottish stalwart, performed well, perhaps producing some of his best career form. Peter twisted his ankle in the Swedish tie, but before the incident was playing accurate and determined squash, enough to suggest he will be a force within Scottish Squash for some time to come. Similiarly Stuart and Martin performed well and will hopefully have benefited from the experience. Stuart has commited himself to full time squash next season and shows signs of being able to kick his game up to the next level.

The teams were supported well by sportscotland and the Scottish Institute of Sport and accompanied by Paul Frank (National Performance Director), Andy Kerr (SIS Notational Analyst), Sue Warwick (SIS Physiotherapist) and Alex Taylor (Heriot-Watt University Sport Scientist).

Scottish Squash Closed Selection Event No. 2 View Results >>>

This past weekend saw the National Centre host the 2nd of the Scottish Squash Closed Selection Events. The tournament proved a success with players having an opportunity to compete for Scottish Ranking points and test themselves with their Scottish team-mates and rivals.

The Men's event saw an upset with Stuart Crawford defeating Peter O'Hara in an entertaining five game match. Stuart has recently commenced full time training and is working hard to step up a level
of competition for next season. Peter is recovering from an ankle injury received at the European Championships and I'm sure will be keen for revenge in the next event, having been our number 1
domestically based player for quite some time.Graham Melvin and Jamie Macaulay both played extremely well throughout and showed encouraging signs for this years World Junior Championships to be held in Pakistan in August.

In the Women's event Sue Dalrymple defeated Louise Philip in the final in three games. With Senga McFie withdrawing from the event at the eleventh hour Sue was pushed up to number one seed and proved herself up to the task. The tournament marked a return to competition for Louise who beat Lauren Gray in a semi-final. Welcome results from Lizzie Leitch, who also played well to defeat Lauren in the 3/4 playoff and good form from Joanna Morgan were encouraging signs.

The next event will be hosted by Aberdeen Squash Racquets Club on the 7th and 8th of August. This will be the final event before the team is selected for the World Women's Teams Championships in Holland in September and the final hit-out for the U/19 boys team before their trip to Pakistan for their World Teams Champs.

Selection Event 3 was held in Aberdeen at ASRC. Thanks go to Fred Milne and staff for helping to make the weekend a success.
The Men's Event saw Stuart Crawford hold off all challenges and win his second straight selection event. Stuart has been training full time for several months and demonstrated both an impressive consistancy and variety in his game. The weekend was also the final event for the Scottish Junior Men's World Championships Team before they depart for Pakistan on Thursday.
The boys acquited themselves well and the tournament proved to be a useful part of their final preparations.
The Women's Event saw Wendy Maitland dominate. Not long off the circuit, Wendy showed some of the class that took her to a top 30 ranking earlier in the year in despatching the field with relative ease.

Scotland's Team for the World Women's Team Championships has been announced. Pam Nimmo, Wendy Maitland, Sue Dalrymple and Frania Gillen-Buchart have been selected.
The team will be accompanied by Paul Frank,(National Performance Director), Alex Taylor (Programme Lead Sport Scientist) and Kerry Kirk (physiotherapist).
The event is to be held in Holland from September 26 until October 2. There are 20 countries participating, including defending champions England. You can follow Scotland's progress on the web at http://www.womensquash.com/

Scotland's Team for the World Junior Men's Team Championships departs for Pakistan this coming Thursday. The team, consisting of Alan Clyne, Graham Melvin, Jamie Macaulay and Greg McArthur will be contesting both individuals and subsequent teams event from the 17th until the 28th.
Participating in the Individual event only will be Kristen Johnson, who is ineligible for the team event due to age and Lyall Patterson, our National
u/15 champion, who will be gathering experience for his assault on the World Junior Championships in New Zealand 2006.
Scotland are seeded 13/18 for the teams event. The relative strength of the event may be seen by the fact that Scotland has finished no higher than 13th for the best part of a decade. All players have put in a solid, commited preparation for the event and will acquit themselves well.
